Data networks are the lifeblood of today’s business and the data comms rack/server rack is the beating heart at the core.

When companies grow, so does the data network and the temptation to just solve any immediate expansion problems by adding on as you go is usually irresistible. However, this can mean that the original tidy comms rack can quickly turn into a tangled web of cables that is very time-consuming to manage, let alone track down a fault.

Given the complete reliability that a modern business has on its computer systems, it is concerning that many are reluctant to invest time and money to properly maintain and upgrade the cabling and equipment on a regular basis.

A new tidy data comms rack

A client of ours recently went through the process of replacing two smaller server racks that had become very overgrown after numerous short-terms fixes over time.

We installed one new larger comms rack and set the client up with a new neat and tidy system that they are able to properly and safely manage on a day-to-day basis. You can see the difference in the “before” and “after” photos.

Our client, the operations manager for the UK, was delighted with the end result.

Tips to keep tangles away

• When upgrading your data comms rack, we would suggest you plan for expansion and buy a rack that will accommodate growth. This will be more cost- and time-effective than ad-hoc additions which end in a spaghetti mess!
• Label cables to make it easier for your IT team to locate faults and make changes
• Keep cables neatly tied together using either cable ties or Velcro ties (especially if you will be making quite a few changes)
